For many parents picking the name of their newborn is among the most important decisions they need to make at the time. Some might opt to pass on a traditional family name, or others want something that will stand out from the crowd.

Whatever the choice, there is typically a nationwide trend when it comes to baby names.

Certain names that had once faded into obscurity might come back as a top choice, while names found in contemporary popular culture can make unusual additions.

In recent years there has been a definite uptick in some more eclectic names. And the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) data for England and Wales released today (May 17), proves this is still the case.

ONS data always reflects the year just gone, and today's announcement came later in the year than usual, meaning the newest data today looks back at the names that were most popular for both boys and girls in 2022.

The previous year there was a huge shake-up on the boys’ list when the name Noah took the top spot from Oliver, which had been number one for eight years in a row.

As the new data shows, Noah has continued to reign in 2022 as the most popular name of the year.

Muhammad, which has been consistently popular for a while, rose from fifth to second place between 2021 and 2022.

There was no change in the number one spot for the girls as Olivia remained at the top for the seventh year in a row.

Making up the rest of the top five were Amelia, Isla, Ava, and Lily.

Some more unique names that appear on the girls’ list include Ophelia, Ottilie and Luna.
