While the ORIGINAL RB-USB-RIM is a feature rich USB to radio interface module designed to work in even the most demanding radio connections, the new RIM-Lite family is designed to streamline the most popular options into one cost effective module. Here is a listing of the current "Lite" family of products:

*The V2 adds connectivity from the PC_OK indicator to pin 7 of the radio connector. Pin 7 goes Low when the PC and Interface are communicating successfully.

This is a streamlined version for folks that don't require all of the features that the "full-blown" RIM has to offer.

Instead of two channels of low-pass filtering, the RIM lite only has one. Typically only one channel of filtering is needed since there is only ONE modulator in a given radio. This filter remains 5 pole with a "knee" of approximately 10kHz.

The charge pump and additional amplification stages have been removed to reduce cost. This module still makes over 1Vp-p of audio which is adequate for driving most modulator circuitry directly.

The buffering of the COS and CTCSS inputs has been reduced to a simple diode. Again reducing circuitry that is not often used.

The discriminator audio input attenuator is now a potentiometer. No more external voltage dividers necessary to knock the radio's audio down to the CM119's input level!!

The DB-25 connector has been replaced with a DE-9. This simplifies connections and reduces product size. However, this means that the additional I/O pins are not brought to the outside world.

This version is customized to be plug-and-play with the Alinco DR-x35 single band series of mobile radio. Simply plug the module onto the radio's DB-9 connector, connect to a PC running AllStar and you're up and running.

Since the DR-x35 family is available in VHF, 220, and UHF versions, this interface allows a user to quickly deploy a simplex AllStar node on the most common amateur bands.

NOTE: THIS MODULE DOES NOT WORK WITH THE DUAL-BAND DR-635 ALINCO MOBILE.

TYT TH-9000 / Alinco DR-x38 Series Rear Connector Cable: Notes / Info

This cable plugs into the radio's internal option connector and adds a DB-9 female to the rear of the radio. This DB-9 is pinned the same as the Alinco DRx35 series radio and can be used with the RIM_Alinco (above) for use with AllStar/HamVoIP.

RIM-Maxtrac: Schematic Layout

This version is customized to be plug-and-play with the Motorola MaxTrac/Radius/GM300 line of under dash mobile radios.

This module will also work with many Motorola radios that utilize a 16/20 dual row option connector, including: CM200, M1225, SM50, and CDM Series.

NOTE: THIS MODULE DOES NOT WORK WITH THE GTX SERIES MOBILE.

Simply plug the module onto the radio, connect to a PC running AllStar and you're up and running. Radio channel steering is also implemented for those radios that are capable of it through their option connector.*

RIM-Maxtrac-RM:

This product is VERY similar to the RIM-Maxtrac. The RM stands for Repeater Maker. The RM adds a second 16 pin module to connect to a second receive only radio. This allows for one radio to be the receiver and the other to be the transmitter in a repeater type setup. The -RM version supports support channel steering on the RX radio ONLY.

AllStar uses the volume up/down inputs of the CM119 IC for COS/CTCSS inputs. Windows applications react to these inputs as volume up/down, thus these inputs WILL CHANGE the TX level in the windows environment. The resolve is to remove the COS/CTCSS input circuitry and thus the ability of external forces to change the Windows audio levels. The -9600 versions below are modified for use with Windows software applications.

RIM-Alinco 9600:

It is plug-and-play with the Alinco DR-x35 single band series of mobile radio. Simply plug the module onto the radio's DB-9 connector, connect to a PC with your packet software installed and you're up and running.

This is a version of the RIM_Maxtrac that has been modified to work with the VARA and other CM119 sound card compatible packet software. (See the schematic notes for modification details.) It is plug-and-play with the Motorola MaxTrac/Radius/GM300 line of under dash mobile radios.

This module will also work with many Motorola radios that utilize a 16/20 dual row option connector, including: CM200, M1225, SM50, and CDM Series.

Simply plug the module onto the radio, connect to a PC running your packet software installed and . Radio channel steering is also implemented for those radios that are capable of it through their option connector.*

All of the new Lite version products still include the missing pulse detector circuitry to avoid stuck PTT lines. By default, the heartbeat and PTT outputs are configured to allow the missing pulse detector to automatically disable the PTT line in the event of a stuck PTT due to USB PC communications failure.

All of these new boards offer an optional serial EEPROM that can be used to store radio/repeater settings.*

Courteous and friendly customer service. While product documentation is currently being written, the user's manuals for these products will follow in the same lines as the rest of the RB products in being straight forward and thorough.

I am in the process of assembling a fairly broad collection of connection diagrams for various repeaters and simplex radios. These will all be published on-line for folks to download, easily make the necessary connections to their radio, and configure their software to be on the air with AllStar easier than ever before.

My hope is that these products help more people get started with AllStar and its advanced linking capabilities.
