Two truckloads of armed revolutionary guardsmen were stationed nearby as a precaution. The religious extremists, in several groups of about 50 each, made repeated marches past the building, shouting: "Communism is destroyed! Islam is victorious!" The Mojahedeens said they would continue their sitdown until the government could guarantee that their headquarters would not be attacked. "We will sit here until we save this building," said one young man. "If they want to kill us, let them." Monday's attacks by zealots were in retaliation for a weekend march by about 100,000 leftists to protest against Khomeini's crackdown on the press. Late Monday, supporters of the ayatollah, whose numbers were also estimated at 100,000, massed at Tehran University to demonstrate solidarity with his policies.

The leftists are angry about the closing of the Tehran newspaper Ayandegan last week and about the new press code barring criticism of Khomeini and his associates. The government also published a tough new code for foreign journalists Monday. In Paris, former Prime Minister Shahpour Bakhtiar predicted in an interview with Agence Presse that Khomeini's regime would last no more than six months, and "I will deliver the coup de grace." "The Khomeini regime will fall very fast, not because of its opposition, but because of the unfathomable stupidity of its leaders whose policies are leading to an explosion," he said. Bakhtiar, a longtime opponent of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, was the last prime minister appointed by the shah in a desperate attempt to retain the throne. He tried to persuade the shah's opponents to agree to a limited monarchy, but Khomeini refused to compromise.

great- grandfather, brother-in law TEHRAN, Iran (AP) More than 300 guerrillas of the leftist Mojahedeen began a sitdown under armed protection in front of their headquarters today to prevent attacks by groups of Moslem zealots marching by. Other groups of Moslem extremists armed with knives and clubs were reported circulating through the city harassing pedestrians. One man said he saw a group attack a bearded young man carrying books who they said "looked like a communist." The split in the Iranian revolutionary forces between leftist opponents of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's conservative sectarianism and militant supporters of the Shiite Moslem patriarch appeared to be widening. Club-wielding extremists Monday ransacked the headquarters of the People's Fedayeen, another leftist guerrilla group, and beat up four of its members during a day of factional fighting in which offices of several other leftist groups were attacked. Residents, caught by surprise, scrambled for higher ground when the wall of water began flooding the city. Many climbed onto rooftops for safety, but in some low-lying areas the water rose above two-story houses, sweeping away those who thought they had made it to safety. The Hindustan Times said its estimate of 25,000 victims was based on the populations of Morvi and the nearby villages of Lilapur and Adepar. Morvi is near the center of Gujarat state. It was once the capital of a maharajah's realm and was a prosperous community on the banks of the Machu.

Relief and rescue workers Monday brought the first supplies of food and fresh water that residents of Morvi have had for 48 hours. Emergency workers and reporters waded through shoulder-high water to reach Morvi, which "looks like a ghost city" and is "stinking with decomposing bodies," one reporter said. There were fears of an outbreak of diseases, such as cholera. The massive wall of water from the dam on the outskirts of the city hit Morvi Saturday during evening prayers. The bodies of 50 men, women and children were found in one Hindu temple.

One report said the rushing waters did "colossal damage within a span of 15 minutes, leaving a trail of thousands of Compiled From News Services NEW DELHI, India Rescue workers used rowboats or waded through shoulder-high floodwaters today to bring relief supplies to survivors of the collapse of a dam at the western industrial city of Morvi. Official estimates said up to 1,000 people died in the rush of water from the Monchi Dam, which burst Saturday after 48 hours of torrential rains. But reporters visiting the scene estimated 5,000 to 7,000 dead, many swept far downstream by the force of the torrent. Unofficial press estimates of the death toll in the Machu River dam disaster ranged from 10,000 to 25,000. Only 300 bodies have been found so far in the water-covered city of about 80,000 people, 300 miles northwest of Bombay.

begin Sunday Weekend are due by NOON Friday before publico Hon. metro report About 125 AFFTON area residents Monday night urged the St. Louis County Planning Commission to reject a proposal to construct 150 townhouse-type condominiums on the east side of Mackenzie Road, just north of Deerwood Drive. Residents said that the apartments would be incompatible with "free-standing" homes already in the area. Opponents also cited the potential for increased traffic and sewage problems.

The planning commission is expected to make a recommendation at its Sept. 4 meeting. Final decisions on all zoning questions in unincorporated areas are made by the County Council. The FLORISSANT City Council is being asked to sell three acres of Behlmann Park for $9,000 to the Commerce Bank of Florissant for an extension of the bank's parking lot. At a hearing on the proposal Monday night, City Council members said that the park is practically unused.

Some residents said that was true except for annoying beer parties by under-age youths. But Donna Harris, who lives near the park, said, "My son we can't keep him out of there. We enjoy the park." Others objected to bank's plan to construct a 6-foot-high stockade fence around the parking lot. In other matters, the council heard opponents of plans to widen Humes Lane between Patterson and Shackelford roads. Residents said the greater traffic volume on a widened road would be hazardous to children.

A hearing on the Humes Lane proposal and a final vote on the Behlmann Park sale are scheduled for the council's Sept. 10 meeting. The BALLWIN Board of Aldermen Monday night awarded contracts to two asphalt paving contractors for resurfacing 12 residential streets and City Hall Drive and parking lots at City Hall. The cost to the city will be $129,802. The board also approved a $6,000 contract with Union Electric Co.

for a study of the feasibility and costs of relocating overhead electric facilities along Holloway Road between Clear Meadows and Claymont drives. The study is part of a comprehensive plan to upgrade a half mile of Holloway Road at an estimated cost of $700,000, Mayor Richard G. Andrews said. Can all the OVERLAND city fathers find a place to put a 127-year-old log cabin back together? The Overland Historical Society hopes so, and says it's willing to pay for the reconstruction if an appropriate site can be found. The cabin, now dismantled was originally built on a site near Babler State Park in West County.

Its owner, Myldred Link of BEL-NOR, donated it to Overland but it has never been assembled. Mayor Norman A. Myers Monday night named an aldermanic committee to study the idea. A public hearing on the cabin has been scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug.

29 at the Overland City Hall, 9119 Lackland Road. The CRYSTAL CITY City Council Monday night heard an application from a cable television company seeking a franchise in the city. Mike Singpiel, vice president of Horizon Communications, which has cable TV applications pending in several St. Louis County municipalities, made the request. Crystal City Mayor Boston Richards referred the proposal to the council's finance committee.

The mayor said cable television was "one of the most important" matters to come before the council in several years. The monthly rental cost would range from $5.50 to $15 per television set, Singpiel said.
